1.1 Background of the Study
Horror films, known for their thrilling and often disturbing content, have long been a popular genre in global cinema. These films typically aim to evoke fear, suspense, and anxiety, often portraying graphic and intense scenes (Oluwaseun & Musa, 2024). In Nigeria, horror films—both domestic and foreign—are widely consumed, especially among the youth demographic. The impact of these films on youth behavior is an area of growing concern, as studies suggest that exposure to certain content can influence attitudes, perceptions, and risk behaviors, particularly in the context of issues such as violence, substance abuse, and general recklessness (Akinwale & Kanu, 2023).
Maiduguri Metropolitan Council, the capital of Borno State, is an area that has faced unique challenges, including insurgency, which may influence the reception and impact of media content, including horror films. The youth in Maiduguri, often caught in conflict zones or societal turbulence, may be particularly vulnerable to the influence of horror films on their behavior and decision-making (Mustapha & Ibrahim, 2024).
This study explores the relationship between horror film consumption and youth risk behavior in Maiduguri Metropolitan Council, aiming to assess how exposure to horror films affects behaviors related to risk-taking and decision-making among young people in this area.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
While horror films are popular among Nigerian youth, little is known about their specific impact on risk behaviors in conflict-affected regions such as Maiduguri. This study seeks to investigate how exposure to horror films influences the risk behaviors of youths in Maiduguri, focusing on behaviors such as substance abuse, violence, and reckless actions (Olawale & Bello, 2023).
1.3 Objectives of the Study
1.4 Research Questions
1.5 Research Hypothesis
1.6 Significance of the Study
This study will shed light on the potential effects of horror films on the behavior of young people in conflict-affected regions, contributing to understanding how media influences youth in such areas. The findings will inform educators, parents, and policymakers on the risks associated with horror film consumption and help develop strategies for mitigating negative behavioral impacts.
1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on youths in Maiduguri Metropolitan Council, with an emphasis on their consumption of horror films and associated risk behaviors. Limitations include difficulty in accessing all youth groups and the challenges posed by insecurity in the region.
